South Caucasus stability built on national interests of regional states, says Georgian speaker

16 April 2026 19:40

Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili has said that Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan make decisions based on their national interests, a factor he linked to strengthening stability in the South Caucasus region.

Speaking at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Istanbul, Papuashvili stated that the situation in the South Caucasus is currently stable, attributing this to the protection of sovereign interests by regional states, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

He emphasized that the Georgian Parliament has taken concrete steps in this direction by increasing transparency, improving legislation, and prioritizing the interests of the population above all else.

“Peace requires responsibility, vigilance, restraint, and a long-term vision. It must be continuously protected,” he said.

The speaker further noted that in the modern era, foreign interference and hybrid warfare represent key threats to democracy and sovereignty, adding that unified legal mechanisms should be developed at the international level to address these challenges.
