Swiss government rejects pro-Armenian initiative
Head of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Ignazio Cassis has rejected the initiative by the MEPs to convene an international conference on Karabakh, stating that the resolution of the conflict should be handled by Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The MEPs had proposed that the government should organise a conference in 2025 to discuss the return of Armenians who voluntarily left Karabakh, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
They hoped that the forum would facilitate dialogue between Azerbaijan and the Armenians who left Karabakh, aimed at the collective return of the Armenian population. However, the Swiss government opted for a more cautious approach, rejecting the initiative put forward by the engaged MEPs.
Earlier, Cassis said that Switzerland is working on organising a second conference on Ukraine, which will also include Russia.
"The work is intensively ongoing with Moscow, Washington, as well as with the G7 and the EU. We are working closely with many partners and trying to involve Russia from the first conference in Bürgenstock," Cassis stated.
He also noted that positive signals have come from the administration of US President-elect Donald Trump.
