Azerbaijani FM addresses UN Security Council debate on global order
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov addressed an open debate of the United Nations Security Council held under China’s presidency, focusing on the theme of upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening a UN-centred international system.
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry’s press service told local media that Bayramov used his remarks to reaffirm Azerbaijan’s firm commitment to international law, multilateral cooperation, and the central role of the United Nations in addressing global challenges.
In his speech, the minister underscored the risks posed by intensifying geopolitical polarisation, the rise of unilateral approaches, and ongoing violations of international law. He stressed the importance of ensuring universal and non-selective adherence to fundamental principles, including respect for state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs.
Bayramov also highlighted the need to strengthen accountability for actions that contravene international law, emphasising the importance of justice and support for countries dealing with the aftermath of conflicts. This includes facilitating the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of displaced persons and addressing the long-term destructive consequences of war.
He further pointed to the urgent necessity of making the UN system more effective, inclusive, and responsive. In this context, he called for reform of the UN Security Council to better reflect the interests and representation of developing nations.
The minister also reiterated Azerbaijan’s ongoing contribution to global multilateralism. He referenced the country’s successful chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement, its role in hosting COP29 and the 13th session of the World Urban Forum, as well as its current chairmanship of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia.
