Switzerland to host key talks on normalisation of Azerbaijan-Armenia ties

24 September 2024 19:43

Spokesperson for the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Thomas Fitzsimons has said that President of the Armenian National Assembly Alen Simonyan and Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Sahiba Gafarova will meet to discuss normalisation of relations between the two countries.

The bilateral meeting will be held for the third time during the 149th IPU assembly in Geneva, Switzerland from October 13 to 17, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

As the exact date of the meeting has not been announced yet, Fitzsimons emphasised that the meeting aims to support peace efforts in the region. Simonyan and Gafarova previously met on May 16.   While delivering a speech at the Summit of the Future 2024 in New York, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov urged Yerevan to take steps to remove obstacles to the signing of a peace treaty between the two sides.

On September 16, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that Yerevan and Baku had agreed on 80 per cent of the text of the peace agreement, with the Armenian side proposing to sign it and restore diplomatic relations. Earlier, Pashinyan discussed which countries would benefit from peace between Yerevan and Baku.
