Tehran signals possible military action against Kurdish militants
The Defence Council of Iran has issued a warning that any armed groups infiltrating Iranian territory through the Kurdistan region could trigger massive retaliatory strikes on facilities in the area, Fars News Agency reports.
Ali Akbar Ahmadian, a representative of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the Defence Council, said commanders across all levels of the Iranian armed forces have developed “diverse, asymmetric, and strategic defence plans.” He asserted, “Iran dominates the region and the Persian Gulf, having established a ‘new equation’ in security matters.”
Ahmadian noted that past strikes had been aimed primarily at US and Israeli military installations as well as separatist groups. He warned, “If these groups or elements of the regime are allowed to continue their presence and penetrate Iranian territory through the region, all facilities in Iraqi Kurdistan will be subjected to massive attacks.”
He further cautioned that Iran’s friendly relations and support in the Kurdistan region—including assistance in countering ISIS—could be suspended if such incursions continue.
Earlier reports indicate that the IRGC’s ground forces carried out missile strikes on terrorist centers in Iraqi Kurdistan, signaling Tehran’s readiness to act against perceived threats in the area.
