Top official: Baku does not rely on international organisations to solve problems

12 March 2026 16:48

Azerbaijan does not expect international organisations to resolve its regional challenges,  Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration said.

Speaking at the 13th Global Baku Forum, Hajiyev emphasised that Azerbaijan has learned to address its conflicts through its own political and military means, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

"We do not expect international organizations to solve our problems. It is true that in the first years of independence, we had expectations from them. However, for example, the OSCE became a failed organization and was unable to achieve a resolution of the conflict in the region. The Minsk Group [of OSCE] also failed. As a result, we resolved the conflict through military and political means, and we achieved peace. Azerbaijan and Armenia are now cooperating and deepening the peace agenda," Hajiyev said.

He noted that Azerbaijan now sets its own agenda and seeks practical solutions rather than engaging in rivalry.

"Some think that this is related to military power. Our approach is that we do not participate in rivalry. Middle power is a direction aimed at solving problems. Besides that, for Azerbaijan, energy security is a successful example of multilateral diplomacy," he added.

Hajiyev also criticised the limitations of global institutions in addressing security issues.

"There is a major crisis regarding peace and security issues. This is directly related to the UN Security Council. The Council also has a weakness in the matter of global security," he said.

Highlighting Azerbaijan’s active role in international cooperation, the presidential aide pointed to the country’s work with the Non-Aligned Movement, COP29, and the Organization of Turkic States.

"There were conflicting opinions about this within the Non-Aligned Movement. However, during Azerbaijan's chairmanship, the organization paved the way for cooperation among various countries. At COP29, very important decisions were also adopted thanks to Azerbaijan's effective chairmanship. Azerbaijan also plays an active role in the Organization of Turkic States. Our country has a significant role in the expansion of the organization," Hajiyev said.
