Top official: Russia, Azerbaijan forge robust partnership

25 June 2024 19:30

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk highlighted the burgeoning bilateral relations between Russia and Azerbaijan during his speech at the "Primakov Readings", Caliber.Az reports citing local media.

Overchuk emphasized the successful cooperation between Moscow and Baku in various sectors, particularly in advancing the international transport corridor "North-South" and other significant projects.

"We are currently witnessing a peak in relations with Azerbaijan. We are engaged in several major and interesting projects, including industrial development. Together, we have modernized our border checkpoints, ensuring efficient passage of motor transport without delays," he remarked.

Overchuk underscored Azerbaijan's strategic role as a transit country, which greatly benefits Russia's economic interests.

He further elaborated on how Azerbaijan's transit policy facilitates Russia's exports and enhances conditions for expanding trade links with countries in the Global South.

"For instance, through Azerbaijan, we gain access to Iran, where we are involved in constructing a crucial 168-kilometre segment of the Resht-Astara railway and access to Iranian ports such as Bandar Abbas and Chabahar. This opens avenues to markets in Libya, Arab countries, and across Africa, which are essential for our economic growth," added the Russian Deputy Prime Minister.
