Trump lifts Syria sanctions at Türkiye’s request, hails progress under new president PHOTO
US President Donald Trump announced the lifting of sanctions on Syria, stating that the move came at the request of Türkiye, as he addressed a press conference at the White House.
Speaking to reporters, Trump also addressed Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, praising his leadership, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.
The U.S. president remarked that he thought Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa was doing a great job, noting that it was a complicated region but that Al-Sharaa was a strong leader. He added that he had a very good relationship with Sharaa and that significant progress had been made in Syria.

Trump emphasized that the removal of sanctions reflected the requests of Türk and several other countries. “They asked, we did it,” he said, underscoring Ankara’s pivotal role in the regional diplomatic process.
Highlighting the broader implications, Trump added, “We wanted to give them a break,” noting that the decision has led to a “significant easing” in the diplomatic balance within the region.
