Turkish FM foresees higher European spending on Ukraine after US vote
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has indicated that European countries' financial support for Ukraine could increase following the US presidential election.
“Europe has already borne substantial expenses in support of Ukraine, and depending on the outcome of the [US presidential] election, these costs could rise,” Fidan stated, Caliber.Az quotes his words cited by foreign media.
He also highlighted the potential challenge of European countries competing to bolster their military forces, which could further strain resources.
“If European countries individually enter such a race, it would create another problem,” he added.
Meanwhile, Fox News has announced that Donald Trump has won the US presidential election, with the Republican candidate declaring himself the 47th President of the United States.
“We have witnessed the greatest political gambit in the history of the United States,” Trump said in a speech to supporters.
Fox News reported that Trump has secured 277 electoral votes, surpassing the 270 needed for victory. The network also confirmed his win in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, although CNN and AP have not yet projected results for Wisconsin. CNN's figures show Trump with 266 electoral votes, while AP reports 267. Vice President Kamala Harris is currently at 226 votes.
Robert Kennedy Jr., who had previously been an independent candidate, congratulated Trump on his victory after withdrawing from the race and endorsing the Republican.
Trump received congratulations from several world leaders, including those from France, Israel, Hungary, Austria, Serbia, and El Salvador, as well as NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also offered his congratulations, expressing hope that Trump's "peace through strength" approach would help bring a just peace to Ukraine. “I hope that together we will put it into practice,” Zelenskyy wrote on social media platform X.
