Turkish FM: Netanyahu's Syria remarks reveal his opposition to regional peace
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent comments regarding Syria highlight his lack of support for peace in the region, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated during a joint press conference with his Georgian counterpart Maka Bochorishvili in Ankara on February 26, 2025.
Fidan emphasized that Israel must cease its regional expansionism under the guise of securing its own safety, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media outlets.
“Israel should put an end to its policy of regional expansionism under the pretext of ensuring its security,” Fidan remarked. He called for a fair resolution to all global armed conflicts, stressing that ignoring some conflicts while addressing others is inconsistent with both legal principles and human values.
The Turkish Foreign Minister further urged the international community to take a firm stance against Israel’s actions, which he believes contribute to destabilizing the region.
Fidan also addressed Syria’s ongoing political transition, reiterating Türkiye's expectation that “the next steps in the political transition process in Syria will be inclusive and implemented in such a way as to prevent separatist actions.” He expressed hope that the recently concluded National Dialogue Conference would benefit Syria and its people, emphasizing Türkiye’s longstanding position that Syria's future should be determined by its own citizens.
“We see the organization of the National Dialogue Conference as an important element in efforts to protect the future of the Syrian people,” Fidan explained. “We believe that the conference will contribute to the continuation of the transition process in Syria in an inclusive manner, building state institutions based on the vision of unity, solidarity, and a prosperous future for all Syrians.”
Fidan also commented on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, reaffirming Türkiye's position from the outset—that the destructive war must end as soon as possible. He acknowledged that although Türkiye had initiated diplomatic efforts and maintained contacts at various levels, there has been no substantial progress to date.
However, Fidan pointed out that a new dynamic has emerged with the arrival of the new US administration. “Indirect talks are already underway between the relevant parties, and all sides are now talking to each other,” he said.
Turkey remains committed to contributing as much as possible to a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis. “Türkiye is a strong and key country in the region and will definitely play an important role in maintaining peace and preserving the ceasefire,” Fidan concluded.
