Turkish FM warns of key steps in PKK dissolution, vows close monitoring
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan highlighted the need for concrete actions to follow the decision to disband the PKK terrorist organization, emphasizing that Ankara will meticulously oversee the implementation of these measures.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Ankara alongside his Syrian and Jordanian counterparts, Fidan emphasized the significance of the PKK’s dissolution, Caliber.Az reports per Turkish media.
“If the decision to dissolve the PKK terror group is implemented 'sincerely, it will be very beneficial for everyone, for our future,'” he noted.
Fidan’s remarks come after the PKK, a group classified as a terrorist organization by Türkiye and its allies, announced its intent to disband. However, the Turkish minister underlined the importance of concrete actions to follow through on the decision, expressing hope that it would lead to long-term peace and stability in the region.
Turning to the ongoing situation in Syria, Fidan highlighted Türkiye’s priority of preventing terrorist organizations from exploiting the region’s instability. Specifically, he addressed the presence of the YPG/PKK, the Kurdish militant groups, in Syrian territory. “The fact that one-third of Syrian territory is under the occupation of the YPG terror group poses a threat to Syria,” Fidan said, underlining the significance of this issue in regional security dynamics.
In addition to addressing the PKK and YPG, Fidan also referenced the broader regional security context. He pointed to a collaborative effort involving five countries in the region to fight ISIS (Daesh), emphasizing the importance of continued action against the terror group. “Today's meeting also discussed concrete steps that can be taken and what can be done,” he added.
