Turkish president appeals to Armenian Patriarch
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has sent an appeal to Bishop Sahak Mashalian, Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople, regarding the events of 1915.
In his message, Erdogan conveyed his respect for the memory of Ottoman Armenians who perished during the challenging circumstances of World War I and extended condolences to their descendants.
According to TRT Haber, Erdogan's address acknowledged the profound impact of World War I on Ottoman territories, leaving a lasting mark on collective memory. He emphasized the importance of jointly preserving the atmosphere of peace and tranquility inherited from past generations.
"Preserving the atmosphere of peace and tranquility inherited from our ancestors is possible only through our joint efforts," President Erdogan noted.
Erdogan's message underscored Türkiye's commitment to ensuring that no Armenian citizen feels isolated or marginalized in their homeland. He emphasized the significance of approaching historical events with reason, conscience, and scientific inquiry, while cautioning against radical rhetoric and divisive narratives.
"Türkiye did not and will not allow any Armenian to be isolated, alienated, and feel like a second-class citizen in his homeland," Erdogan stated. "It is important that we treat historical events guided by reason, conscience, and science, without giving free rein to radical discourses, marginalization, hatred."
