Türkiye plans air task command in Somalia to strengthen military partnership
Türkiye has announced plans to establish a new Air Task Command in Somalia, as part of expanded defence cooperation between the two countries, Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler confirmed.
Güler emphasised that the new command will include helicopters, support aircraft, and combat jets, and is intended to significantly strengthen the operational and defensive capabilities of the Somali National Armed Forces, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
He described the move as a “strategic component” of the long-term security partnership between Ankara and Mogadishu, particularly in the areas of training, security, and counterterrorism operations.
Türkiye already operates its largest overseas military base in Mogadishu, where it trains thousands of Somali soldiers under the TURKSOM mission. Last month, the two countries also signed a maritime defence cooperation agreement, further reinforcing their security ties.
The new Air Task Command is expected to support Somalia’s fight against the al-Shabaab militant group and contribute to stabilising key regions of the country.
