UK agrees to extradite Pakistani citizen to Azerbaijan over cyber fraud charges
The United Kingdom has agreed to extradite a Pakistani citizen to Azerbaijan following a request from the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General's Office in connection with an alleged cyber fraud case.
According to Azerbaijan's Prosecutor General's Office, the UK approved the extradition of Kasim Sohail Mohammad after reviewing the request and supporting documentation submitted by the Azerbaijani authorities, Caliber.Az reports.
Investigators allege that Mohammad illegally obtained funds from the bank accounts of foreign customers using electronic technologies. According to the investigation, he used the stolen money to purchase goods from online stores operating in Baku before cashing out the proceeds and committing other unlawful acts.
Based on the evidence collected during the investigation, Azerbaijani authorities formally charged him under the country's Criminal Procedure Code.
After allegedly evading the investigation, a court ordered his pre-trial detention in absentia, and he was placed on an international wanted list through Interpol's National Central Bureau in Baku.
He was subsequently detained in the United Kingdom during an international search operation.
According to the Prosecutor General's Office, Azerbaijan's Ministry of Justice is now taking the necessary steps to arrange his transfer to the country.
