UK signals support for Ukraine's use of weapons against Russia

10 July 2024 12:07

UK’s Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has indicated that the new Labour government in the UK will uphold the policy of allowing Ukraine to utilize British-supplied weapons for strikes against targets within Russia.

This announcement underscores a continuity in UK's support for Ukraine amid ongoing conflict dynamics in Eastern Europe, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.

Speaking on the issue, Starmer emphasised the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law and using arms for defensive purposes.

"Arms donated by Britain must be used in accordance with international humanitarian law and for defensive purposes," Starmer stated.

He further clarified, "It is for Ukraine to decide how to deploy it for those defensive purposes."

The prime minister's stance closely aligns with the position articulated by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak regarding the use of UK-supplied weapons by Kyiv. This policy highlights UK's commitment to supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and right to defend itself against external aggression.

In contrast to the UK's approach, the US has taken a more restrictive stance, explicitly blocking the use of arms it supplies to Ukraine for strikes deep inside Russia. However, President Joe Biden authorized limited cross-border strikes in May, reflecting nuanced considerations in US foreign policy.

The UK's decision underscores its strategic alignment with Ukraine amidst heightened tensions in the region. As the conflict continues to evolve, international responses and support for Ukraine's defense capabilities remain pivotal factors in shaping regional stability and security.

The Labour government's affirmation of support for Ukraine's defensive operations with UK-provided weapons signals a continuation of Britain's active role in addressing security challenges in Eastern Europe. The development will be closely monitored by global observers and stakeholders for its implications on regional dynamics and international relations.

The UK has consistently advocated for Ukraine's inclusion in European and transatlantic security frameworks, supporting its aspirations for closer integration with NATO and the European Union. This support is part of broader efforts to promote stability and security in Eastern Europe.

The UK's stance on Ukraine's use of weapons against Russia reflects its strategic interests in countering Russian influence in Eastern Europe and maintaining regional stability. This policy contributes to broader efforts within NATO and the European Union to deter aggression and uphold international norms.

The UK's commitment to Ukraine's defence underscores its role as a key player in European security architecture, balancing support for sovereignty and territorial integrity with efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.
