Ukraine hands over chairmanship in GUAM to Azerbaijan
Ukraine has handed over the chairmanship in GUAM to Azerbaijan.
The corresponding decision was made at a GUAM meeting on December 1, 2023, according to Caliber.Az.
The results of Ukraine's chairmanship in GUAM and the priorities of Azerbaijan's chairmanship were also considered during the above-mentioned meeting of the Council of National Coordinators.
The sovereignty and territorial integrity of the GUAM’s member states, the creation of new economic opportunities, the development of trade between European and Asian markets, the promotion of the full activity of the free trade zone, interaction with the European Commission on GUAM transport corridor issues and simplification of customs procedures were the priority spheres in GUAM’s activity during Ukraine’s chairmanship in 2023.
Energy security, transport, and trade turnover were the priority spheres during Azerbaijan’s recent chairmanship in GUAM in 2020.
The GUAM Organisation for Democracy and Economic Development was established on October 10, 1997. GUAM’s main founding document is a joint communiqué signed by the leaders of the four countries in Strasbourg. Azerbaijan chaired GUAM in 2007-2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020.
