COP29 leader: Climate action requires global investment and prevention

29 May 2025 16:36

Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan’s Special Representative on Climate Issues and President of COP29, emphasised the importance of joint international efforts in both preventing and mitigating the effects of climate change.

Speaking to local media, he highlighted Azerbaijan's active role as COP29 chair in coordinating with Brazil and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat ahead of the COP30 summit, which will be hosted by Brazil, Caliber.Az reports.

“We [the COP29 team] are actively preparing for the 30th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30),” Babayev said. “Until November of this year, Azerbaijan holds the COP presidency. Accordingly, there are many events and issues we are working on together with Brazil and the Convention Secretariat.”

Babayev noted a concerning trend: growing scepticism in some parts of the world toward international climate negotiations. “There is a tendency in many countries where certain scepticism toward the international climate process is becoming apparent,” he observed.

In response, Babayev stressed the need to mobilise the international community around a shared understanding of the dangers posed by climate change. “We are working to mobilise all countries so that we are united in the view that climate change brings risks,” he said. “Humanity must invest not only to mitigate the consequences of climate change but also to be able to prevent them.”
