According to the statement of the mayor, the proclamation acknowledges Azerbaijan’s historic milestones, including the original declaration of independence in 1918, and highlights 2025 as marking 34 years since the country restored its independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union. It also notes the 33rd anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and Azerbaijan.
Mayor Bowser’s statement also emphasised Azerbaijan’s progressive legacy, recognising it as the first Muslim-majority nation to grant women equal rights, including the right to vote. The proclamation further commended the Azerbaijani community and the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Washington, D.C., for their contributions to the values of freedom, equality, and justice.
"Now, therefore, I, the Mayor of Washington, DC, do hereby proclaim May 28, 2025, as "Azerbaijan Independence Day”in Washington, DC," the statement reads.
It is worth noting that last year, Muriel Bowser also signed a proclamation in connection with Independence Day and supported the organisation of other events related to Azerbaijan.
