Ukraine launches surprising counteroffensive in Russia's Kursk
Ukraine has initiated an unexpected counteroffensive in Russia's Kursk region, catching many by surprise, especially given the recent heavy pressure on the Ukrainian military.
The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed the development via Telegram, stating that Moscow's forces successfully repelled two Ukrainian counterattacks on January 5, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation under the National Security and Defense Council, noted that Russian forces were caught off guard by the Ukrainian attacks, which targeted multiple fronts. Initially, Ukrainian officials withheld information about the operation.
Analysts suggest that this counteroffensive could be aimed at exposing Russia's weaknesses, particularly in the lead-up to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20. It is speculated that Ukraine may be seeking to strengthen its position ahead of potential peace talks to resolve the ongoing conflict.
Meanwhile, Russian forces continue to push forward in both the Kursk region and eastern Ukraine.
