Ukrainian envoy: Azerbaijan emerging as key regional leader

Azerbaijan continues to consolidate its role as a regional leader and expand its comprehensive cooperation with strategic partners, Ukrainian Ambassador to Baku Yuriy Husyev wrote in a statement published by domestic media.

Marking the 34th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s restoration of independence, the ambassador praised the country’s achievements and growing influence.

“Today, Azerbaijan has not only fully restored its territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders but is also actively strengthening its regional leadership, broadening political, economic, energy, and defence cooperation with strategic partners,” Husyev stated. “Ukraine sincerely congratulates Azerbaijan on this significant date and expresses its gratitude for the assistance and consistent support it has shown in matters of our territorial integrity and national sovereignty.”

According to Husyev, the strategic partnership between Ukraine and Azerbaijan plays a vital role in reinforcing regional security and stability.

“Both countries share the same aspiration to protect their sovereignty and territorial integrity. They also maintain active cooperation in security, energy, economy, and diplomacy — all of which provide a reliable foundation for long-term development,” he said. “Azerbaijan, just like Ukraine, clearly understands the critical importance of international support for ensuring state independence and the success of any peace process.”

The diplomat also highlighted the value of Azerbaijan’s experience in resolving the Karabakh conflict for Ukraine, which continues to face Russian aggression.

“By analysing the experience of Karabakh, one can see that even after prolonged and devastating conflicts, peace is achievable when there is political will, international support, and coordinated action at the strategic level,” Husyev explained. “A key example of this was the peace declaration signed earlier this year by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, with the support and direct involvement of US President Donald Trump. This historic event, which transformed the regional security landscape, demonstrated that international mediation and the determination of leaders can turn crises into real opportunities for peace and development.”

The ambassador further noted that a fair peace goes beyond simply ending war — it also means restoring the power of international law and creating lasting security guarantees.

“True peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but the comprehensive restoration of international law and the establishment of reliable, long-term guarantees of security,” Husyev emphasised.

He concluded by underscoring the importance of Ukraine’s partnership with Azerbaijan.

“In this context, the partnership between Ukraine and Azerbaijan holds special significance. Our joint efforts in regional security, as well as in the fields of energy and economic development, create a strong foundation for the stability and prosperity of both countries in the future,” the ambassador said.
