UN chief arrives in Baku for second time to participate in COP29
On November 21, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Azerbaijan to attend the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
The guest was met by Azerbaijani Health Minister Teymur Musayev and other officials at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
This visit of Guterres to Azerbaijan is the second since the COP29 climate change conference began. During the first visit, he participated in the World Leaders Climate Action Summit within COP29 on November 12-13.
As part of the conference which started on November 11, and will run through November 22 at Baku Stadium, Baku aims to reach an agreement on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) related to climate finance. This goal is seen as essential for driving global climate action.
To deliver a process that is transparent, impartial and inclusive, the COP29 Presidency has developed a plan based on two mutually reinforcing pillars to enhance ambition and enable action.
Besides, Azerbaijan is committed to developing its renewable energy potential, which is an important part of the country’s plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2050. The country intends to increase renewable power capacity to 30% by 2030 and diversify its existing energy system to become a leader in green energy. Azerbaijan is committed to leading by example and will update its national targets in its next 1.5-aligned Nationally Determined Contribution.
