UN climate chief commends Azerbaijan’s COP29 leadership
Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), has expressed his gratitude to Azerbaijan for its role in international climate diplomacy.
Speaking at a press conference in Istanbul as part of preparations for the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31), Stiell thanked both Brazil, the current COP30 President, and Azerbaijan, which chaired COP29, for their contributions to the UN climate process, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
He underscored that COP31, set to take place in Antalya, Türkiye, is expected to play a crucial role despite the challenging global context.
“I thank Brazil, which currently presides over COP30, and Azerbaijan, which presided over COP29. Clearly, COP31, which will be held in Antalya, comes at an extraordinary time. We are facing a new global disorder—a period of instability and mistrust, of power demonstrations and trade wars. Understanding and international cooperation are under threat. However, climate action has the potential to bring stability to an unstable world,” Stiell said.
