UN confirms smooth COP29 preparations under Azerbaijan's chairmanship
Spokesman for UN Secretary General Stephane Dujarric has said preparations for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) are on track under Azerbaijan's chairmanship.
The upcoming conference, set to be hosted by Azerbaijan, is a focal point for the international community's efforts to combat climate change, Dujarric told Azerbaijani media, Caliber.Az reports.
He noted that UN Secretary-General António Guterres expects real and concrete progress in the international organisation's fight against climate change from Azerbaijan, which is hosting COP29.
Dujarric added that Gutterish remains concerned about global warming and climate change and wants to see progress on combating these trends on many fronts.
"The Secretary-General's messages on climate change last Friday [July 26] were very clear, simple and very dramatic. And it's not just about the measures taken by Member States. It's about the fossil fuel industry, the importance of recognising our responsibility for creating this climate change situation, the dire situation we're in. So we want to see progress on several fronts, including loss and damage, to prevent this from happening," he said.
