UN rep: Azerbaijan attaches great importance to gender equality
Policy Specialist in the UN Women's Economic Empowerment Section Venge Nyirongo has said that Azerbaijan attaches great importance to gender equality.
“We highly appreciate the initiatives proposed by Azerbaijan within the COP29, as well as the topics it has chosen. We welcome Azerbaijan’s desire to draw the attention of the international community to the importance of gender equality in terms of climate change,” Nyirongo told Report by commenting on the action plan presented by Azerbaijan within its chairmanship in COP29.
The UN representative also emphasised that about two million women and girls suffer from a lack of food as a result of climate change.
“It is commendable that Azerbaijan is raising this issue,” he added.
Baku will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
A group of Eastern European countries has chosen Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to host COP29 climate talks next year.
Earlier, Bulgaria withdrew its candidacy to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in favour of Azerbaijan.
Moreover, Baku and Yerevan agreed to support each other at some international venues. In a joint statement, Armenia said it would support Azerbaijan's bid to host the COP29 summit.
The conference is being held in rotation by five UN regional groups, and Eastern Europe will take part next year.
