UN rep: COP29 to play crucial role in maintaining global focus on climate issues
Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Simon Stiell has emphasised the crucial role of COP29 in maintaining global focus on climate issues.
"COP29 will be pivotal in keeping climate change at the forefront of global agendas. Nearly 98 per cent of the world's population faces challenges related to climate infrastructure,” he noted during a meeting at the office of the Non-Aligned Movement, Caliber.Az reports citing the local media.
Stiell praised COP28 for addressing key issues, including shaping the agenda for COP29.
He also acknowledged the significant role played by the Azerbaijani president in organising this high-profile event, which will serve as a major platform for international climate action and expectations.
Baku will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
A group of Eastern European countries has chosen Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to host COP29 climate talks next year.
Earlier, Bulgaria withdrew its candidacy to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in favour of Azerbaijan.
Moreover, Baku and Yerevan agreed to support each other at some international venues. In a joint statement, Armenia said it would support Azerbaijan's bid to host the COP29 summit.
The conference is being held in rotation by five UN regional groups, and Eastern Europe will take part next year.
