A side event held on the margins of the 2026 ECOSOC Youth Forum has underscored the critical role of mine action in ensuring safe urban reconstruction, particularly in post-conflict settings, according to a statement posted by Azerbaijan’s mission to the United Nations on X.

The event, titled “Rebuilding Safely: The Role of Mine Action in Urban Reconstruction,” was organised on April 16 at United Nations Headquarters by the Non-Aligned Movement Youth Organisation (NAMYO) and the National Assembly of Youth Organisations of the Republic of Azerbaijan (NAYORA), with support from Azerbaijan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

Addressing participants, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Permanent Representative Elvin Ashrafzade said safety remains a prerequisite for rebuilding cities, stressing the importance of engaging young people and leveraging modern technologies in advancing mine action efforts.

Richard Boulter of the United Nations Mine Action Service outlined operational and technical challenges facing mine clearance in urban environments, noting that sustained support and a clear strategic approach are essential to achieving measurable progress.

Representatives from Azerbaijan’s mine action authorities and youth organisations also highlighted ongoing efforts and the importance of raising awareness, strengthening international cooperation and advancing national initiatives in the field.

The discussion brought together youth delegates, representatives of member states, international organisations, academia and civil society participating in the ECOSOC Youth Forum.
