US Embassy honours victims of Khojaly Genocide on 34th anniversary

26 February 2026 10:59

The United States Embassy in Baku has paid tribute to the victims of the Khojaly tragedy on its 34th anniversary, offering condolences to the Azerbaijani people.

The statement was published on the embassy’s official page on social network X, as reported by Caliber.Az.

“Today, together with the people of Azerbaijan, we honour the memory of those who died in Khojaly in 1992. On behalf of the U.S. Embassy in Baku, we express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who lost loved ones. As we honour the memory of the victims, we remember the importance of human dignity, compassion, and building a lasting peace for future generations,” the embassy said in its post.

The tragedy being commemorated occurred during the night of February 25–26, 1992, when Armenian armed forces, with the support of the 366th Guards Motor Rifle Regiment of the former Soviet army stationed in Khankendi (then called Stepanakert), stormed the town of Khojaly.

The attack resulted in a brutal mass killing of civilians. In total, 613 people were killed, including 106 women, 63 children, and 70 elderly individuals. Additionally, 1,275 civilians were taken captive, and the fate of 150 people remains unknown to this day.

The human toll of the massacre was devastating: eight families were entirely wiped out, 25 children lost both parents, and 130 children lost one parent, leaving lasting scars on the community.
