US envoy praises Ilham Aliyev’s diplomatic wisdom in bringing closure to Karabakh conflict VIDEO
US Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has lauded Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for his remarkable statesmanship in resolving the conflict with Armenia that had persisted for more than three decades.
Speaking live on Fox News, Witkoff recalled a key exchange that took place in August during a meeting between former US President Donald Trump and Ilham Aliyev in the Oval Office.
According to him, Trump directly asked the Azerbaijani leader why, with such a strong army at his disposal, he chose not to advance further after regaining the occupied territories.
“He [President Aliyev] said, 'Because that’s all I wanted back — what they took. I didn’t need more,'” Witkoff said, quoting the Azerbaijani leader’s reply.
The envoy described Aliyev’s stance as “an amazing decision” and “an example of statesmanship,” praising the Azerbaijani president for exercising restraint and prioritising peace over escalation.
