US greenlights potential $1.17B naval chopper deal with India
The US State Department has authorized a potential $1.17 billion sale of MH-60R Multi-Mission Helicopters, along with related equipment and support, to India.
India has requested 30 Multifunctional Information Distribution System-Joint Tactical Radio Systems, as well as advanced data transfer systems, external fuel tanks, and AN/AAS 44C(V) forward-looking infrared systems, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
The proposed package also includes an operator machine interface assistant, spare containers, design and construction services, munitions, spare and repair parts, and personnel training resources.
Additional items requested for communication, testing, and operational support include the Joint Mission Planning System and Identification Friend or Foe equipment.
Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems, based in New York, is slated to be the primary contractor for the deal.
According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the proposed sale will enhance India's ability to "deter current and future threats" by bolstering its anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
The helicopters will be deployed by India's naval aviation squadron, which was established in March following a $2.6 billion purchase of 24 MH-60R helicopters in 2019. The full fleet, expected to be operational by 2025, will replace India's aging Sea King helicopters, strengthening the country's defense against maritime threats, including piracy and China's expanding influence in the Indian Ocean.
