US immigration crackdown targets over 2,000 Armenian nationals
Armenian authorities have acknowledged the US government's intention to deport more than 2,000 Armenian citizens.
Zareh Sinanyan, Armenia's High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, confirmed the development during a press conference, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
Sinanyan clarified that the individuals in question should not be considered part of the Armenian diaspora.
"They are Armenian citizens who do not have the legal right to remain in the United States," he said. According to the Commissioner, this deportation concerns more than 2,000 individuals, though the real number could be much higher, as this is merely the first batch. Additionally, there is no available data regarding the number of people already deported.
The move is part of ongoing efforts by the US government to enforce immigration laws, which have led to increasing scrutiny of foreign nationals living without proper documentation. Sinanyan's comments have sparked concerns about the potential impact on the Armenian community in the US, as well as the broader implications for bilateral relations between the two nations.
