US official: Azerbaijan-Armenia peace deal highlights Trump’s regional focus

The historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, signed in Washington with the participation of U.S. President Donald Trump, underscores the diplomatic importance that Trump places on the South Caucasus region.

Speaking at the 6th Caspian Business Forum organised by the Caspian Policy Center in New York, Caleb Orr, Senior Adviser to the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, said the agreement could bring tangible benefits for regional peace. “This will be very good for the region and for the entire United States of America,” Orr added, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

He also emphasised the broader strategic significance of the Caspian region, which encompasses the South Caucasus and Central Asia, for U.S. foreign policy. Orr stressed that Washington’s interest is long-term, not temporary.

“This region represents an important strategic interest for the United States in terms of investment and development. The United States has been investing in the region for many years. Over the past 30 years, it has invested more than $30 billion here,” the State Department official noted.

The 6th Caspian Business Forum, dedicated to the theme “Connectivity, Finance, and Energy along the Middle Corridor,” commenced in New York under the organisation of the Caspian Policy Center. The event opened with remarks by Efgan Nifti, CEO of the Caspian Policy Center, followed by the reading of President Ilham Aliyev’s address to the participants by Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration. The forum continued with speeches from representatives of Türkiye and Kazakhstan, further underscoring the region’s growing role in global connectivity and energy security.
