Uzbekistan proposes new multimodal corridor involving Azerbaijan

Uzbekistan’s Transport Ministry has initiated the creation of the "Türkiye-Caucasus-Central Asia-South Asia" new multimodal corridor through Afghanistan.

Uzbek Transport Minister Ilkhom Makhkamov voiced this proposal at the recent trilateral meeting of Uzbek, Azerbaijani and Turkish ministers in Tashkent, Report informs citing the Uzbek media.

The minister noted that it is necessary to take joint measures to develop cargo transportation with the South Asian countries.

For this purpose, Makhkamov proposed to use the possibility of transporting goods through Afghanistan to Pakistan.

Uzbek carriers are testing the route, having started delivering goods by road through Afghanistan.

According to the statistics, the cargo transportation volume along the Pakistan-Afghanistan-Uzbekistan route has greatly increased. The volume of transported goods increased by 2.6 times and reached 330,000 tons in the first half of 2022.

The volume of cargo transportation between Uzbekistan and the countries of the CIS, the Middle East, the Caucasus and the EU increased by 3.5 times in the first half of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. The cargo transportation volume is 52,000 tons.
