Voter turnout in snap presidential election in Azerbaijan UPDATED

Today, on February 7, Azerbaijan held a snap presidential election. The polls began at 08:00 and continued until 19:00.

According to Caliber.Az, 76.73 per cent of voters took part in the early presidential elections in Azerbaijan as of 19:00 local time.

This was stated by Farid Orujov, head of the Information Centre of the Secretariat of the CEC of Azerbaijan.

He noted that 4,971,032 people voted as of 19:00.

The counting of ballots in connection with the extraordinary presidential elections in Azerbaijan has begun. The bulletins are counted in the presence of observers.

It should be remembered that 6 million 524,203 citizens have the right to vote.

The Central Election Commission registered 7 presidential candidates - Ilham Aliyev of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, self-nominated candidates Zahid Oruj and Fuad Aliyev, Razi Nurullayev of the National Front Party, Fazil Mustafa of the Great Order Party, Elshad Musayev of the Greater Azerbaijan Party, Gudrat Hasanguliyev of the Whole Azerbaijan Popular Front Party.

It is particularly noteworthy that for the first time in the history of independent Azerbaijan, the snap presidential elections are being held throughout the country. District election commissions have been formed in the liberated territories.

The voting process is being observed by delegations from the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (IPA CIS), CIS, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), CECs of Georgia, Montenegro, Ukraine, Maldives Election Commission, OSCE ODIHR Mission, etc. In total, more than 90,000 observers are registered to monitor the elections.

The independent media centre "Elections-2024" is working in connection with the elections. A total of 34 influential media outlets, including the world's leading media organisations such as the Associated Press, BBC, Al Jazeera, Kyodo, etc., are also covering the elections.

Three local pro-government organisations - Citizens' Labour Rights Protection League, the Opinion Monitoring Centre and the Social Research Centre LLC - are conducting exit polls. Citizens' Labour Rights Protection League is carrying out exit polls together with the US Oracle Advisory Group.

The League for the Citizens' Labor Rights Protection League, together with the American organization Oracle Advisory Group, conducts exit-poll at 500 polling stations in 40 electoral districts, Public Opinion Monitoring Unit - at 200 polling stations in 33 electoral districts, LLC Center for Sociological Research - at 125 polling stations in 25 electoral districts.

The elections are being held on the basis of the decree of the President of Azerbaijan dated December 7, 2023.
