Vučić: Serbia sees Azerbaijan as truly friendly country, eyes deeper economic ties

17 May 2026 20:50

Serbia considers Azerbaijan a truly friendly country and sees strong potential for further expansion of bilateral cooperation, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said during a business meeting with entrepreneurs operating in Azerbaijan, held as part of his visit to the country.

Vučić highlighted the development of political and economic relations between Belgrade and Baku, noting that his recent talks with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev were productive and focused on identifying new areas of cooperation, Caliber.Az reports, citing Azertag.

He stressed that the opening of a direct air route between Baku and Belgrade is an important step in strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in tourism and business connectivity. Vučić also underlined the need to deepen cooperation between tourism companies in both countries.

Calling on Azerbaijani businesses to explore investment opportunities in Serbia, the Serbian president pointed to sectors such as retail trade, spa and mountain resorts, and agriculture as promising areas for collaboration. He noted that Serbia’s eastern regions, with their natural landscapes and spa destinations, offer significant potential for Azerbaijani investors.

“I hope that we will find new areas for cooperation between Serbia and Azerbaijan. Because just as there are no borders to the friendship between our countries, there should also be no borders to our economic cooperation. I believe that our trade turnover should be five times higher than the current level, and I think we can achieve this,” Vučić said.

He also expressed interest in reciprocal investment flows, noting that Serbian investors are considering opportunities in Baku and other regions of Azerbaijan.

Vučić underlined that the strengthening of friendly ties between the two countries creates substantial opportunities for expanding economic engagement and deepening long-term cooperation.

In a separate statement on his official page on the social media platform X, Vučić described President Ilham Aliyev as a “great friend of Serbia.

He said that during his meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart, the sides discussed the further development of a strategic partnership between the two countries.

“We discussed further enhancement of the strategic partnership between our two countries, and I believe we will soon open up new areas of cooperation,” the Serbian president stated.
