Washington mayor proclaims May 28 "Azerbaijan Independence Day"

Washington mayor Muriel Bowser has signed a declaration proclaiming May 28 "Azerbaijan's Independence Day".

Azerbaijan is the first Muslim country in the world to grant women the right to vote, according to Report.

The document also notes that Azerbaijan proclaimed its independence on May 28, 1918.

At the same time, it is stressed that this year marks the 31st anniversary of the restoration of Azerbaijan's independence, as well as the 31 year since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the US and Azerbaijan.

The declaration reads that 700,000 members of the Azerbaijani community share their rich culture and heritage with the residents of the District of Columbia.
