Western Azerbaijan Community condemns EU support for Armenia's militarization

29 September 2024 09:12

The Western Azerbaijan Community has strongly criticized a recent statement by EU spokesperson Peter Stano, which appears to justify the arming of Armenia and the ongoing operations of the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMA) in the country.

In a statement, the community expressed deep concerns over the EU's actions, calling them unconstructive and biased, Caliber.Az reports.

“The expansion and extension of EUMA's mandate without coordination with another border country is an unfriendly step,” the community's statement said. The mission has also been accused of demonstrating “discrimination and bias towards ethnic Azerbaijanis.”

The community highlighted EUMA's failure to address the plight of Azerbaijanis expelled from Armenia's border regions.

"Although the mission's mandate includes studying the impact of the conflict on the situation of people living in the border regions, and we have repeatedly sent EUMA our appeals, the mission has remained indifferent to the fate of Azerbaijanis expelled from Armenia's border regions, which it regularly patrols," the statement noted.

Furthermore, the Western Azerbaijan Community underscored the growing concern over the militarization of Armenia, which they argue is actively supported by the EU and its member states, particularly France.

“The military, financial, and economic assistance provided to Armenia by the EU through the European Peace Facility and in other ways should be seen as encouragement of aggressive actions by this country, which has caused tens of billions of dollars of damage to Azerbaijan,” the statement read.

The community warned that Armenia's history of military aggression intensifies whenever it feels a sense of military superiority. "Everyone knows that Armenia resorts to military aggression as soon as it feels the slightest military superiority," the statement added. Therefore, the arming of Armenia, where “revanchist sentiments are raging,” cannot be viewed as a mere sovereign choice, they said, and stands in stark contrast to Azerbaijan's legitimate defensive steps.

In conclusion, the community called on the EU to cease actions that contribute to geopolitical tensions in the region.

“We demand that the EU not introduce geopolitical dividing lines into the region, stop militarizing Armenia, and help Azerbaijan to eliminate the devastating consequences of the Armenian aggression,” the Western Azerbaijan Community urged.
