World's first carbon fibre metro train takes tracks in China

The world's first carbon fibre metro train, CETROVO 1.0 Carbon Star Express, has begun passenger service on Metro Line 1 in Qingdao, East China's Shandong Province, marking a significant advancement in metro train technology.

Developed by CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co., the new train features key structural components made from carbon fibre composites instead of traditional metals like steel and aluminium alloys. This innovation makes the train approximately 11% lighter and reduces its operational energy consumption by 7%, contributing to a more energy-efficient urban transit system, Caliber.Az reports via Chinese media.

The lightweight carbon fiber construction is designed to enhance the train's load-bearing capacity, while offering advantages such as higher strength, corrosion resistance, and reduced maintenance costs. Additionally, the new material improves vibration reduction, leading to a quieter and more comfortable ride for passengers.

The carbon fibre metro train also supports China's broader environmental goals, with each train set to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 130 tons annually. This development aligns with the nation's commitment to achieving its "dual carbon" targets and advancing the green transformation of urban rail systems.

The Qingdao Metro Line 1, which spans about 60 kilometres with 41 stations, is an important transport route serving the city. The introduction of this cutting-edge train marks a key step forward in the evolution of sustainable public transportation in China.
