Yerevan, Baku take major step toward peace, signing date on horizon, Armenian FM says

12 April 2025 14:03

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has announced that Yerevan and Baku have reached a critical milestone in their ongoing peace talks, confirming that the two sides have agreed on the text of a peace agreement.

The focus now, he stated, is on determining the time and location for its formal signing, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

Speaking at a high-level panel during the 4th Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Mirzoyan emphasized the urgency of consolidating peace in the South Caucasus following years of conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“We must build peace in the region,” the minister declared, underlining Armenia’s commitment to a stable and cooperative future.

“We have discussed the normalization process with Azerbaijan and, after lengthy negotiations, have agreed on the text of the peace agreement. Our current goal is to determine the time and location for its signing. We believe this marks the beginning of establishing formal relations,” Mirzoyan stated.

The announcement came during a panel titled "Challenges and Opportunities for Regional Cooperation in the South Caucasus," where Mirzoyan was joined by Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Georgian counterpart Maka Botchorishvili.

Moderated by Nigar Göksel, Türkiye/Cyprus Director of the International Crisis Group, and TRT World journalist Auskar Surbakti, the panel explored pressing regional dynamics and the shared aspirations for a stable and prosperous South Caucasus.

Key topics included the ongoing peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which remains a pivotal factor for long-term regional stability. Panelists also addressed the normalization efforts between Türkiye and Armenia—an initiative viewed as essential for broader reconciliation and economic integration.

Georgia's growing role as a diplomatic and logistical bridge in the region was also acknowledged, with Botchorishvili emphasizing Tbilisi’s commitment to inclusive development and cross-border collaboration. The forum provided a rare platform for open dialogue among the three South Caucasus nations—an important step amid a historically complex and, at times, adversarial regional context.

Participants further examined the need for sustainable development, inclusive growth, and regional resilience in the face of global fragmentation. Emphasis was placed on pragmatic cooperation over divisive politics, with the shared understanding that regional integration is key to unlocking the South Caucasus’ full potential.

The Antalya Diplomacy Forum continues to serve as a critical venue for fostering dialogue on peacebuilding, regional connectivity, and multilateral diplomacy, offering a forward-looking vision for the South Caucasus amid evolving global challenges.
