Yerevan supports Black Sea electric cable project
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has confirmed Armenia's interest and readiness to join the ambitious project of laying an electric cable across the Black Sea bed.
Speaking at a joint press conference with his Georgian counterpart, Irakli Kobakhidze, Pashinyan emphasized the importance of inclusivity in regional and international initiatives, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
In his statement, Pashinyan said, “We highlight Armenia's interest and readiness to join the project of laying an electric cable along the Black Sea bed,” underscoring the significance of energy cooperation in the region.
This announcement comes in the wake of a strategic partnership agreement signed on December 17, 2022, between Azerbaijan, Hungary, Georgia, and Romania. The agreement aims to build an energy bridge connecting the Caucasus region to Europe. The key element of the project is a 1,195-kilometre-long submarine electric cable, which will carry 1,000 MW of electricity.
The cable will be designed to transport green electricity generated in Azerbaijan, passing through Georgia and the Black Sea to Romania. From there, the power will be distributed to Hungary and other European nations, helping to diversify energy sources and bolster Europe’s green energy capacity.
