Yet another school attack threat in Türkiye leads to student's arrest
Police in the Turkish city of Zonguldak have arrested a high school student who threatened to carry out an attack at his school.
The 17-year-old was sending threatening messages via WhatsApp, which caused concern among students and parents. Law enforcement authorities responded quickly, launched an investigation, and detained the student, Caliber.Az reports per Turkish media.
During a search of his home, six blank pistol cartridges were seized. In his testimony, the teenager said he had brought the cartridges from a village as a souvenir and that the messages were sent as a joke. Officials revealed that he had previously been expelled from another school after detonating firecrackers in a classroom.
Following the recent arrest of a student in Zonguldak over school attack threats, Türkiye has also witnessed two major school-related violent incidents in the same week that have drawn national attention.
One of the most serious cases occurred in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa, where a former student opened fire at Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, injuring at least 16 people, including students and staff, before taking his own life after being cornered by police.
Just one day later, in Kahramanmaraş, a 14-year-old student carried out a second, more deadly attack at a middle school, killing nine people and injuring around twenty others before dying during the incident. Officials stated the attacker used firearms believed to belong to his father and entered classrooms during school hours.
