Youth participation in urban planning discussed at WUF13 PHOTO
A Children and Youth Assembly was held as part of the 13th session of the UN World Urban Forum (WUF13), bringing together participants to discuss the role of younger generations in shaping the future of cities.
According to state media, discussions focused on expanding the participation of children and youth in urban planning processes, as well as on creating safe, inclusive, and accessible living environments.
Participants noted that by 2050, approximately 70 per cent of children and young people worldwide are expected to live in urban areas. At present, many of them face housing challenges, particularly in informal settlements and densely populated areas, highlighting the need for solutions tailored to local conditions.
The assembly emphasised that housing should be viewed not only as shelter but also as a key factor influencing safety, health, and overall social well-being. Youth-led initiatives and proposals aimed at improving urban environments were also presented and discussed.
Particular attention was given to housing policy, urban planning reforms, increasing youth participation in decision-making, and ensuring access to affordable housing for future generations.
At the conclusion of the event, participants stressed the importance of developing concrete proposals to expand housing opportunities for children and youth, as well as strengthening cooperation to enhance the quality of life in cities.
