Zangazur Corridor key to regional peace & prosperity - Azerbaijani roving ambassador

The opening of the Zangazur Corridor will serve as a confidence-building measure between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Azerbaijani president’s representative for special assignments Elchin Amirbayov said this while speaking at an online seminar at Washington's Hudson Institute, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

“For us, I think, if we are talking about long-term, sustainable, and irreversible peace, the opening of the Zangazur corridor is one of those immediate results of peace that can be to the benefit not only of Azerbaijan but even more to the benefit of Armenia. Because, as you know, because of the occupation of Azerbaijani lands, for almost three decades, Armenia has been completely isolated in the region. It was deprived of participation in any economic projects in the South Caucasus,” he said.

Amirbayov noted that this could actually change the situation.

“It can change the rules of the game for the whole region. This is a win-win project. On top of that, we hear the Armenian government talking a lot about the famous crossroads of the world project. I think the only way to realize this is to allow Armenia to open two of its four borders, which are closed. Reopening the Zangazur corridor could serve as a confidence-building measure between the two countries, as it would increase their interdependence to a certain extent,” he added.

Background on the Zangazur Corridor

The Zangazur Corridor is a proposed transport route that aims to link Azerbaijan with its exclave, Nakhchivan, through Armenian territory. This corridor is part of broader efforts to enhance regional connectivity and economic cooperation following the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The successful implementation of this project is expected to open new avenues for trade, tourism, and political dialogue, fostering stability and prosperity in the region.
