Russia considers removing Taliban from terrorist list FM cites "real power" in Afghanistan

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that Russia is considering removing the Taliban from its list of terrorist organizations, acknowledging the group's significant control in Afghanistan.

Speaking to TASS, Lavrov emphasized that the Taliban represents a "real power" in the region, a fact that Russia and its Central Asian allies cannot ignore, TASS reports.

"They are the real power. We care about Afghanistan," Lavrov stated, underscoring the pragmatic approach behind the initiative. He explained that recognizing the Taliban's authority reflects a "realization of reality," essential for maintaining regional stability and addressing shared concerns with neighboring countries.

Lavrov also noted that the UN Security Council has not officially designated the Taliban as a terrorist organization, although it has identified 12-15 individuals associated with the group as terrorists.
