ADB plans to support Azerbaijan in institutional development, water management
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) plans to provide significant support to the Azerbaijani government in institutional development and policy, said ADB Director for Azerbaijan, Sunniya Durrani Jamal.
During a panel discussion at the 2nd International Exhibition and Conference on Water Management, Baku Water Week, Jamal emphasised the importance of regional cooperation in resource management, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
“First, we provide a dialogue platform for countries. Second, we assist in standardisation, which is especially important for trade. Third, we support countries in developing regional investment programs for subsequent implementation by individual countries or the private sector,” Jamal said.
Jamal added that the ADB facilitates cooperation in water management across different regions.
She also highlighted the importance of investments in the water sector, pointing out several key areas:
-
Data and Technology: This includes satellite data and sensor technologies for monitoring water resources.
-
Smart Meters: Needed for efficient water use monitoring in both industrial and household sectors.
-
Modelling and Forecasting: Using artificial intelligence and “digital twins” to analyse and predict data.
Jamal also stressed the importance of investing in the restoration of traditional infrastructure and ecological solutions: “Watershed management, creating new reservoirs, and reconstructing pipelines and drainage systems are particularly relevant for cities like Baku.”
According to her, ADB projects cover both public and private investments, which is crucial for attracting foreign direct investment and introducing modern technologies. “The ADB can provide Azerbaijan with significant support in these areas,” she said.
