Armenia, Azerbaijan yet to reach full agreement on peace deal No decision on COP-29 participation
The Armenian Foreign Ministry stated that there is still no complete agreement between Yerevan and Baku on the full text of the peace agreement.
Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan made this statement, adding that no decision has been made regarding Armenia's participation in the COP-29 summit in Baku, Caliber.Az reports per Armenian media.
Additionally, there are no agreements on a potential meeting between the leaders or foreign ministers of the two countries.
"However, we are interested in the intensity of such meetings," Kostanyan emphasized.
Azerbaijan has consistently urged Armenia to remove references in its constitution to the 1990 Declaration of Independence, which cites the illegal act of 1989 on the unification of Soviet Armenia and the then Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region of Azerbaijan.
On July 1, President Aliyev mentioned that the text of a peace treaty, or at least basic principles, could be finalized within a few months, emphasizing that the signing of peace hinges on Armenia amending its constitution.
Notably, on October 1, Armenia's President Vahagn Khachaturyan said that, a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan might be finalised prior to Baku hosting the UN's COP29 climate conference.
He expressed optimism about the potential timing of a deal, stating, “It would be good to sign it by COP29,” although he cautioned, “let’s not run ahead of time.”
As the negotiations progress, the prospect of a historic peace deal hangs in the balance, with hopes that it could usher in a new era of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
