Armenia changes rules for deferment from mandatory military service
Armenia is changing the rules for granting deferments from mandatory military service.
At a government meeting on November 27, the Armenian Cabinet approved a draft amendment to the Law “On Military Service and the Status of Servicemen,” Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
The justification notes that the changes aim to enable the country to make use of citizens’ expertise in science, economics, public service, and other sectors. This applies to individuals who have received a deferment for studies at universities ranked among the top 50 in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities.
Once adopted, the new system will provide deferments for studies at the bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and other educational program levels at universities within the top 50 of the global ranking. The deferment will also cover work in the fields and locations specified by the Armenian government.
