Armenian ombudsperson highlights army morale issues contributing to desertion, suicides
Anahit Manasyan, Armenia’s Human Rights Defender, has emphasized that many of the issues plaguing the Armenian military, including suicides and other negative phenomena, stem from the toxic environment created by non-statutory relations within the Armed Forces.
Speaking to journalists on January 16, Manasyan acknowledged the importance of citizens fulfilling their military obligations but stressed that the state also has a responsibility to address these systemic problems, Caliber.Az reports citing Armenian media.
"While it is necessary to discuss citizens’ obligations, we must also address the state's duty to eliminate such issues," she stated.
"Although there may have been some progress, significant shortcomings remain, and continued efforts are necessary."
The Human Rights Defender pointed out that many citizens avoid military service due to the prevailing morale and conditions within the Armed Forces. She called on the state to take decisive action to eradicate non-statutory relationships, suicides, and any mistreatment among soldiers.
"The state must do everything possible to eliminate these issues and improve the treatment of servicemen," Manasyan concluded.
