Armenian prosecutor seeks to confiscate over $5 million from ex-Yerevan mayor
The Armenian Prosecutor General’s Office is demanding the confiscation of more than $5 million from former Yerevan mayor and current MP Taron Markaryan.
A court case has been filed to seize real estate and funds belonging to Markaryan and associated individuals, classifying them as illicit assets, and an arrest has been imposed on the property, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
The Prosecutor’s Office also reminded that on September 8, materials from a criminal investigation involving Markaryan were submitted to the court.
Taron Markaryan is an Armenian lawmaker who has held various positions over the years, including serving as mayor of Yerevan from 2011 to 2018. He was appointed mayor during the presidency of Serzh Sargsyan and simultaneously served as a member of the National Assembly representing the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, making him part of the political elite supporting Sargsyan.
Markaryan resigned from the mayoralty in 2018.
