Azerbaijan approves opening of embassy in Portugal
Azerbaijan's parliament has approved legislation establishing the country's embassy in Portugal, marking a new step in the development of relations between the two countries.
The bill was adopted during an extraordinary session of the Milli Majlis and provides for the opening of Azerbaijan's diplomatic mission in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
During parliamentary discussions, Azerbaijani lawmaker Samir Valiyev said relations between Azerbaijan and Portugal are based on friendly ties and expressed confidence that the opening of the embassy would help strengthen interparliamentary cooperation.
Chairman of the Committee on International Relations and Interparliamentary Ties, Samad Seyidov, noted that bilateral relations are at a positive stage of development and said Portugal is also expected to open an embassy in Azerbaijan in the near future.
The legislation was approved in a single reading.
Lawmakers also highlighted a congratulatory letter sent on June 5 by Portuguese President António José Seguro to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, in which the Portuguese leader said that the opening of embassies in Baku and Lisbon would contribute to the further development of bilateral relations between the two countries.
