Azerbaijan-Armenia border delimitation commission holds 11th meeting

16 January 2025 18:31

The 11th meeting of the State Commission on the Delimitation of the State Border between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia and the Commission on the Matters of Delimitation of the State Border and Border Security between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan was held on January 16, at the border between the two countries.

The meeting was chaired by Shahin Mustafayev, Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, and Mher Grigoryan, Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia, Caliber.Az reports citing local media.

During the meeting, both parties continued discussions on the order of sections and segments of the border line, marking the next steps for the ongoing delimitation process. The delegates agreed to commence the complex task of state border delimitation, beginning from the northern section, where the borders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia converge.

The work will proceed in a southern direction, covering the entire stretch of the Azerbaijan-Armenia border up to the point where it meets the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In addition to border delimitation, the parties reviewed and discussed draft instructions on the procedures for conducting the delimitation works.

The two sides also agreed to determine the date and venue for their next meeting, which will be coordinated in a working order.

The Regulation concerning the joint activities of the Commissions was duly signed on August 30, 2024. Currently, both the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia have begun to carry out internal state procedures.

Baku and Yerevan started the process of delimitation of their border on April 23, 2024 with the installation of the first border markers based on geodetic measurements. As part of the delimitation and demarcation process, Armenia agreed to vacate four Azerbaijani border villages it has occupied since the early 1990s, when the two countries fought a bloody war over the Karabakh (Garabagh) region of Azerbaijan.
